IDSA/HIVMA and PIDS are committed to inclusion, diversity, access and equity in our Society and in health care. As we continue to promote allyship and understanding within our professional community, we invite you to accept the 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge to empower actions that eliminate racial injustices and bring healing to those impacted.
What is the Challenge?
The Challenge was conceptualized by diversity expert Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr. to cultivate deeper understandings of the intersections of race, power, privilege, supremacy and oppression. For 21 consecutive days, the challenge is to complete one action (read, listen, watch, reflect, engage, act, heal) to deepen your understanding of racial injustices and their impacts. Activities can be selected from our Allyship Guide.
Why is IDSA/HIVMA and PIDS Participating in the Challenge?
Understanding culture, history, power, and privilege is a powerful enabler for ending systemic racism and its health impacts.
How Do I Participate in the Challenge?
From July 19th through August 8th, complete one action of your choice each calendar day. To support your activities, we have created an Allyship Guide which contains a wealth of resources to empower your learning. Feel free to select options from this Guide for your 21-day journey and use this Guide to strengthen your voice of support.
While your 21-day plan is primarily self-guided and you may spend as little or as much time on each daily activity, we suggest three specific activities from our Allyship Guide:
- July 19th: Listen to the 1619 Project podcast
- July 29th: Read Structural Racism and Health Inequities
- August 8th: Assess and Reflect on the past 21 days
Track your activities using this tool. This copy of the tracking tool is not available for editing, but you can click File -- Make a Copy (or File -- Download) to create a version that you can personalize.
Engage with us throughout this challenge on social media, using #IDSARacialEquityChallenge
Let us take this opportunity collectively to build a community of change agents and bring an end to systemic racism and health care inequities.
What’s Next?
Continue your learning by watching this panel discussion with IDA&E Champions after engaging in the 21-Day Racial Equity Habit Building Challenge. The discussion features a rich conversation on the personal experiences, reflections, observations, and impacts of structural racism in the ID field and what can be done to eliminate racial injustices.
Looking Back and Learning
It’s been approximately one year since we engaged in the 21-Day Racial Equity Habit-Building Challenge, an opportunity to widen and deepen our perspective of the dynamics of race, power, privilege, supremacy and oppression and how they interact with one another.
While we will not engage in a challenge this year given current pandemic-related priorities, we invite you to reflect on what you’ve learned since and how you can continue to help eliminate systemic inequities. We would like to share reflections from Inclusion, Diversity, Access and Equity Task Force member Ravina Kullar on her participation in the 21-Day Challenge.
