G7 Nations Commit to Combating AMR

In separate United Kingdom meetings June 3-5, G7 ministers of health and finance committed their nations to confronting the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, with meaningful and concrete actions.

The concluding documents from the ministers’ meetings directly address priorities promoted by the Infectious Diseases Society of America. With commitments to foster new antibiotic development through international and cross-sectoral collaboration, and to protect existing infection-fighting medicines through stewardship, strengthened supply chains, expanded global access and responsible manufacturing and disposal, the measures will require new resources and strategies.

Legislation that includes the PASTEUR Act, to build antibiotic stewardship and development in the United States, and significantly increased funding for antimicrobial resistance responses at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority will be essential to our country’s role in following up on these commitments.
