IDSA Launches Call for Applications for Next Editor-in-Chief of Open Forum Infectious Diseases

The Infectious Diseases Society of America seeks candidates to serve in the position of editor-in-chief of Open Forum Infectious Diseases. The founding editor-in-chief of the journal, Paul Sax, MD, FIDSA, recently departed for a new role as editor-in-chief of IDSA’s journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.  

Founded in 2014, OFID publishes clinical, translational and basic research in a fully open access, online journal. It focuses on the intersection of biomedical science and clinical practice, with an emphasis on knowledge that could improve patient care globally.

IDSA is seeking applications from clinically active infectious diseases physician scholars with broad knowledge of the field of infectious diseases and expertise in current scientific methodology to guide OFID’s advancement over the next 5–10 years. The successful applicant will demonstrate a compelling strategic vision for the journal’s ongoing development and differentiation from the Society’s other two journals, The Journal of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Infectious Diseases, and other reputable journals in the field; outstanding academic achievement, including extensive experience as an author and manuscript reviewer; a profound commitment to inclusion, diversity, access and equity in the development of their editorial board, authorship in OFID and OFID content; excellent communication skills and an outstanding reputation for professionalism and collegiality; a collaborative leadership style; a commitment to working collaboratively with the editorial team, staff and publisher as well as with the editors of IDSA’s other journals, to ensure the success and growth of the journal; experience with program building and/or implementation; a clear understanding of trends in scientific journal publishing, including optimizing digital functionality and the deployment of social media channels; an international network of colleagues; and prior editorial experience.  

Candidates should fulfill the ideal characteristics for IDSA volunteer leaders and also have deep understanding of the challenges faced by the field of infectious diseases, with a passion to build awareness and improve its visibility.   • Full CV;
  • A letter summarizing your vision and goals for OFID over the next 5 years, with attention to how you would like to innovate and build on OFID’s success and to how you will promote diversity, inclusion, access and equity within the journal and the broader infectious diseases community;
  • A letter of support from your institution (approximately 30% release time; all editorial management and administrative support will be provided by IDSA).
